In a major relief for Indian Railways passengers, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced a new feature allowing travellers to change their journey date or train without paying any cancellation charges. Under this system, passengers will only need to pay the difference in fare between the original and the new ticket, if applicable.

This move aims to make train travel more flexible and passenger-friendly, especially for those who face last-minute changes in plans due to emergencies or schedule conflicts.

What’s New in IRCTC’s Policy

Until now, passengers who cancelled their confirmed train tickets were subject to a cancellation fee that varied depending on the class of travel and the time of cancellation. For instance, if a ticket was cancelled less than four hours before departure, no refund was issued. Similarly, cancellation between 12 to 24 hours before departure often led to a deduction of up to 50% of the fare.

Under the new policy, passengers will no longer have to bear this penalty if they wish to modify their travel date or change trains. They can simply log in to the IRCTC website or mobile app, choose the “reschedule” or “change date” option, and book a new ticket for a later date. The system will automatically adjust the fare, and only the difference will have to be paid.

This facility will apply to confirmed tickets, and the new date must be within the same route and quota availability. If the fare for the new train or date is lower, the excess amount will not be refunded, but passengers will still save on cancellation charges.

The new policy will apply to both sleeper and AC class tickets.

Passengers can change the date once per ticket.

Rescheduling will only be possible before the departure time of the originally booked train.

The option will not be available for tickets booked under Tatkal or premium Tatkal quotas.

According to sources, the feature will be introduced gradually across different train categories and is expected to be fully implemented by early 2026.
